It was a wet welcome to Naples and our trip to Pompeii
This unique site is vast, a whole commercial Roman Town - frozen in time.
The streets still bear the rut marks from the chariots and carts. many of the buildings are intact (or very close too)
In one there is a mosaic of a dog that bears the Roman equivalent of ‘Beware of the Dog’
It is easy to forget how big this disaster was - over 75% of the population lost on that August night in AD79 - over 20,00 souls.
Again I will let the pictures do the talking.
Tomorrow Corsica and a trip to the forests and mountains.
